Getting help at school while on crutches
The first thing I did when I realized I was really hurt and was going to be on crutches for a while was contact my professors. Regular communication with professors in this kind of situation is always a good idea. In the email to my professors, I cc’ed my academic advisor just as an FYI.
I also contacted the University’s Disability Services office hoping to get some accommodations so I would be able to finish the semester. I’m not taking this injury sitting down. (Pun intended) I’m hoping to get extended time to finish assignments.
The next office I contacted was Student Life. I must document my injury in order for my absences to be excused. I must fill out a form and send the Student Life office proof of my doctor or ER visit.
It’s hard to think about negotiating with the university system while on pain pills. However, I don’t want to lose the semester. So I’m working the system. Sometimes working with a university system requires making several phone calls and emails. It does require patience and stick-to-it-ness.
This is how I see it. I’ll still be here on crutches at the end of the semester so I might as well get credit for my courses.
