7 things to do before the semester starts (if you are a college student with a learning disability)
-
Get familiar with any technology you will use during the upcoming semester. Will you use a Smart Pen? Learn how to use it. Will you need your text books on audio? Do your research and locate the audio version of your text books.
-
Find a pharmacy to fill out your prescriptions.
-
If you are going to request accommodations, get all your documentation in order and make an appointment at the Disabilities Student Services Office.
-
If your documentation is expired, get current testing to verify the existence of a disability.
-
Find where “help” is located on campus. Every campus will have help in different places. The departmental offices might have a list of tutors. The Learning Center might have academic coaches to help you get organized. The library is always full of help. Find out where the Medical Clinic is and which office to go to if you need an excused absence due to illness. Find the technology help desk online.
-
Walk the campus and time how long it will take you to walk from one class building to another.
-
Walk the campus and find your professors’ offices.
