5 Tips on Communicating with the University Regarding Your Disability
Tip #1 Visit the Office of Disabilities Support Services (DSS) website.
Do this tip first. On that website you will find which documentation you will need to present regarding your particular disability. You will also find forms to fill out in order to request accommodations. Follow those instructions.
Tip #2 Start early
The process of requesting accommodations has several steps. It will take time to gather the required documentation. For example your DSS office at your University might request a letter from your physician on official letterhead addressing a list of specific questions about your disability. Your doctor’s office might need a week or so to get that letter written and submitted.
Tip #3 Be organized.
Keep a copy of all documentation. If you visit the ER or doctor’s office or the hospital or therapist make a copy of the paper work. Put all the paperwork in a file. Different offices at your university will require different documentation or evidence that you really required medical intervention.
Tip #4 Document absences.
If you must miss class, contact Student Life or Student Affairs. (Find out which office on campus handles documentation of legitimate absences.) You can look on their website to find out the procedures for documenting your absence. Remember your absence might be documented with the appropriate office but that does not excuse you from the material covered in class or assignments due.
Tip #5 Communicate with your professors.
But only tell them information that pertains to your performance in class. You don’t have to tell them every gory detail.
